In 1977, Drs. Alberto Millán Chivite, Mª Elena Barroso Villar, and Juan Manuel Vilches Vitiennes founded Cauce. Revista de Filología y su Didáctica within the Department of Language and Literature Didactics and Integrated Philologies at the University of Seville. It was the pioneering initiative of its kind at the Teacher Training College for Elementary Education and, therefore, in the current Faculty of Education Sciences.
Since then, the journal has been published annually, featuring studies on Linguistics, Literature, and Didactics in the fields of Spanish, English, and French.
After becoming an international journal in 2006, Cauce soon expanded its research scope to include Communication in its fertile and diverse relationships with Philology and Didactics. Accordingly, its current title underscores the importance of philological and semiotic approaches in these contexts, while also highlighting connections with other disciplines of expression.
Cauce has featured contributions from renowned scholars from leading Spanish universities, as well as institutions across Europe and the Americas, particularly (though not exclusively) from Latin America. The journal maintains an extensive network of international exchanges with other specialized journals and related publications. It is included in the Virtual Cervantes Center's editions and indexed in various national and international quality databases.
Furthermore, Cauce is directly linked to the research group Literature, Transtextuality, and New Technologies: Application to Teaching in Andalusia, based at the Faculty of Philology at the University of Seville. This connection attests to its interdisciplinary nature and its cross-cutting commitment to the three thematic areas it encompasses: Philology, Communication, and their Didactics.
To meet the demands and trends of new technological frameworks, the editorial team launched a website as a hub for information and communication with the research community. Later, the journal joined the Virtual Cervantes Center’s repository, whose diligence and support enable access to PDF versions (with OCR) of all issues, starting with the inaugural one (00, 1977). Additionally, since 2017, the University of Seville Press has provided OJS support to manage editing and publishing according to required academic standards.
