Reflection on PLO 3
PLO 3: Students will understand and apply relevant psychological principles to individuals, relationships, communities, and society at large.
I chose “Personality Research Paper” assignment for my e portfolio, specifically for the application of psychological principles to individuals and relationships, as it connects with PLO 3. The assignment, completed in Dr. John M. Poston’s APSY 414-01: Theories of Personality course, holds deep meaning for me as it not only allowed me to explore different personality theories but also to comprehend how these theories can be applied for personal growth and contribute to community well-being.
The main focus of my paper was on Carl Roger’s Self-Actualization Theory and its practical implications for personal development and counseling. Through the research required for this paper, I gained a full understanding of how psychological principles can influence individuals’ growth and relationships. It showed how personal change is often facilitated through the cultivation of empathy, acceptance and support. In applying these principles to personal relationships, I reflected on how empathy and unconditional positive regard could transform conflicts, especially with my father and sisters. I have been in great conflicts with my father and sisters ever since I got married last year in May. By practicing these concepts in my own life, I hope to create more authentic connections with my loved ones, improving communication, fostering respect and promoting growth. This is connected to PLO 3, as understanding these psychological principles help enhance individual relationships. These could positively affect the broader community in which these relationships are embedded.
Through this paper, I learned how to do research, including the limits of Roger’s Theory. It allowed me to critically evaluate Roger’s Theory, including cultural considerations and need for spiritual transcendence. I learned how to connect spirituality with Roger’s Theory. I also learned to apply Roger’s Theory to my own life and career. This helped me to think about his theory on another level. It was very helpful to apply it to my life as the theory showed close relevance to my own life. It was a reflective experience.
One major thing I learned about myself through this assignment is the importance of congruence between my actual self and my ideal self for personal growth. I realized how much I struggled with incongruence in my own life, especially in my relationship with my father. While growing up, I often felt a gap between the expectations set for me, especially in academics and my own sense of self-worth. This led to feelings of depression and unhappiness. By applying Roger’s concept of congruence, I recognized that my true growth requires being honest with myself, rather than trying to meet an external ideal. This realization helped me to comprehend how I can embrace myself at the present moment. Acceptance is important in relationships, especially with my family. I need to learn self-compassion through this theory.
Ever since completing this assignment, I began applying principles from Carl Roger’s Self-Actualization Theory. In my personal relationships, I’ve become more intentional about practicing empathy. It’s very important to create a safe environment in which people can express themselves without fear. With my relationships, I try to listen more actively and be non-judgmental, which is helping my communications. Also, I became more aware of my self-perception and the role it plays in my mental well-being. The idea of congruence between my real self and ideal self-enabled me to embrace my imperfections and accept myself better. I no longer feel pressured to meet the unrealistic expectations of others.
These skills are important as I work toward becoming a counselor. The person-centered approach, which emphasizes empathy, non-judgement and supportive therapeutic environment, connects with the values in my future practice. I am better equipped to foster trust and create a space where clients feel heard. This shapes my vision as a counselor. I want to honor the uniqueness of my clients and help them feel heard in a safe environment.
