PLO 2: Students will demonstrate knowledge of and apply basic research methods in psychology, including research design, data analysis, and interpretation.
Reflection on PLO 2
For PLO 2, I chose my final research paper for APSY 320: Experimental Psychology. The topic focused on the effects of gratitude and social desirability on prosocial behaviors. This paper represents a comprehensive research project, beginning with an abstract and a detailed introduction supported by relevant literature. Each article is analyzed carefully to highlight its connection to the overall topic without confusing the reader.
The study included participant information, methodology, and materials, such as the instructor-provided experimental script and the Crown-Marlowe Social Desirability Scale. The procedure is clearly outlined, making the experiment easy to understand. The results were analyzed using a two-way ANOVA to examine the relationships between independent and dependent variables. The discussion section connects the findings to existing research, particularly how experiential purchases can increase gratitude and, in turn, generosity. Strengths and limitations of the study are also candidly addressed.
To be honest, writing this paper was challenging. It was my first time conducting such an in-depth experimental study, and it required significant planning, critical thinking, and time. Reading and analyzing relevant articles helped me formulate a solid hypothesis and strengthened my understanding of the topic. Despite the difficulty, I found the process rewarding. I learned that experiential purchases evoke stronger emotional responses than material ones, leading to higher levels of gratitude and generosity, findings that connected with prior studies.
This project helped me develop a more scientific mindset. Learning how to use the ANOVA method and the Crown-Marlowe List taught me to approach data with analytical precision. I also became more observant and thoughtful when reviewing literature, considering how each piece could inform and shape my research.
What surprised me most was how much I enjoyed the research process. Though I initially expected the assignment to be stressful, I found myself genuinely interested in forming hypotheses and exploring them through detailed study. While locating relevant articles in the Biola online library was a challenge, I enjoyed analyzing them and deepening my understanding of gratitude.
This class significantly strengthened my research skills, something other psychology courses hadn’t emphasized as much. I now see how essential these skills are to any field in psychology, especially counseling. I’m grateful for the opportunity to develop these tools, and I know they will serve me well in my future career. I hope to carry forward what I learned into whatever path I pursue next.
