Project Description: For this project,I explored how social media impacts myself and society as a whole. This project pushed me to reflect upon my own social media tendencies and behaviors to understand how myself and others are impacted by social media consumption and overuse.
"You're fairly reliant on social media, but there are far worse culprits! Still, it's good to be reminded that UK adults spend an average of 8 hrs 41 mins on screens every day, and 4 hours of that on smartphone apps alone (mainly social media). That's about a third of each day checking apps. Do you need to rethink your social media habits and the amount of time you spend scrolling? "
After taking a quiz on my own use of social media, this survey determined that I was fairly reliant on social media. Honestly, these results were not surprising, and I actually expected worse, haha! I believe this quiz is accurate and I will shamefully admit I do spend too much time online and it is a habit I am trying to break. However, I think my social media use worsened during the COVID-19 lockdown. Being indoors, online schooling, and working from home kept me isolated and the only interactions were through social media.
Interesting Social Media Statistic
The Pew research center collected data on several topics regarding social media use. The most interesting thing to me was the age divide between various social media platforms. I feel for the most part the data is very accurate, however, I am surprised by Facebook’s data. I feel as though the age ranges for Facebook are wrong. Granted in the past I know most people believe Facebook is an app for older generations, such as our parents. However, based on my own social circle, I know most of my friends in their 20’s are active on Facebook and use that app the most!
Social Media's Impact on Society
I think that social media can be both beneficial and destructive for society. Social media is a great way to connect with friends and new people. However, with the benefits there is also flaws, there is a dark downside to social media. It can be destructive to one’s mental health. There is this idea that people are expected to be perfect and show how amazing their lives are on social media. It is hard to meet this unrealistic standard of life, body image, wealth, and social status. Social media opens the floodgates of comparison to others and can really affect one’s own image of themselves. Do I think social media should be disregarded? No. Do I think social media is toxic? Yes, at times. However, I believe it is up to the user on how they want to consume media and I think it is important for people to understand that not everything you see is real. Social media can be a great thing, I think it is how our society chooses to use it really determines the overall impact of good vs bad media.
Lessons I Learned: I learned that social media has a huge age range and various differences depending on the app. I learned social media is a great thing to have when used in a healthy and responsible way. This module made me reflect more on my reliance on technology and social media. I want to improve my overall mental health and wellbeing by reducing my time spent on media consumption. I think this is something as a society we can all agree on.
