This site is designed to be a curriculum map. It is composed of nine sequential units. The overarching organization of each unit consists of objectives (SWBATs), suggested language and vocational focused tasks and activities for the classroom environment, and suggested experiential activities and excursions to provide immersive opportunities. The curriculum is generalized to be adaptable for advanced beginning or low intermediate adult English language learners. The curriculum map is constructed to be flexible, allowing the teacher to differentiate lesson development for learners with varied needs. This curriculum map is designed to be a tool for teachers to utilize in their planning, design, and delivery of the lessons and experiences that will fulfill the curriculum's intent.
The language objectives are expressed as life skill SWBATs in combination with level appropriate grammar to effect the SWBAT. Many of the unit objectives are expanded through presentation and practice examples. The primary instructional method is task based learning, which may be supplemented by other methodology as needed and desired. The curriculum map is supported by indexes of level appropriate language tasks, activities and lesson plans published by other authors and publicly accessible through the Web. The menu format of the map's structure enables teachers to efficiently access language items and activities in order to recycle them throughout their implementation of the curriculum.
The vocational objectives are holistically included in the unit SWBATs and classroom activities. Across the curriculum, thematically and developmentally appropriate experiential activities in and beyond the classroom provide immersive opportunites for the students to expand their understanding of vocational opportunities. Students' language development in step with their deepening understanding of local employment resources, culminates in being equipped for the job search process, entry-level job readiness and insights into paths for future career development. The vocational objectives are supported by indexes of vocationally focused learning resources published by other authors and publicly accessible through the Web.
The curriculum is presented through a combination of classroom instruction and ongoing immersive experiences inside and outside the classroom. Exposure and interaction with local resources beyond the classroom creates the opportunity for students to gain cultural competencies through observation and participation while being supported by explicit classroom instruction. Throughout their learning journey, students are encouraged to share and draw connections to their own culture and life experiences.
