Storytelling and sharing my lived experience

On this section of my site, you can find information about events I have been invited to participate in, or are leading myself. My talks or presentations are not for the purpose of educating or training. By sharing my own story, my hope is to connect, relate, and to meet people where ever they are on their own journeys on the subjects I cover. I would be honoured to create a presentation or entertainment piece for your organization.

I'm on the roster of CAYR Community Connections as a presenter discussing topics of gender and sexual diversity through the lens of my experience as a diasporic queer Filipinx.
June 2021 - "No Direct Translation: Embracing my identity through Filipinx languages"
This presentation gave the audience a view into how pre-colonial sexual identities and gender roles have persisted and evolved throughout the centuries and how they have shaped my own identity.

June 2022 - "From Swardspeak to Bekimon: a celebration of Filipino queer language"

This two-part presentation shared the historical context of the origins and evolution of Filipino queer code and was capped by a fun workshop learning some words and phrases in the current iteration of this code.

Graphic announcement for the event, featuring the CAYR, York Region and Ontario Trillium Foundation logos. Other elements are the flag of the Philippines, and the updated Pride flag. Underneath the flags, the black text reads: "A Filipino heritage month and Pride month celebration! ". Below this, text in bright pink reads: No Direct Translation: Embracing my Identity Through Filipinx Languages" more text reads: "Join us for a discussion, chat, & celebration! June 11th 6-7:30 PM Online. Registration link in bio."

On October 1st, 2021, I co-hosted BINGO and provided storytelling-based comedy entertainment at Visible, Vibrant & Victorious, an event celebrating 2S-LGBTQI+ older persons with drag, comedy, bingo, music, and community spotlights.

Parol-making workshop via AccessElite
In December 2021 I hosted an virtual workshop for an Asian-American ERG (Employee Resource Group) based in the US. The parol is a Filipino Christmas Lantern. The goal of the workshop was to provide a sense of connection to culture during the Christmas Holiday season for Filipino-American and Asian-American company employees. As a facilitator, I provided AccessElite with a list of materials which were assembled into a kit and mailed to each participant prior to the workshop.

This workshop can be offered virtually for any location, or in-person within the GTA (Greater Toronto Area). The content of the workshop can be customized to include more cultural and historical context if required. It can be presented to a broader audience (outside of the Filipino community) as an immersive cultural exercise.

August 9, 2022
International Day of the World's Indigenous People event
Hosted by the
Indigenous Action Committee and Circle of Friendship Richmond Hill
I had the honour of presenting a talk on the complicated identity of Filipinos in the context of Indigeneity.
