There is an enormous amount of top notch entertainment on each Princess Cruise ship which create talented productions from every corner of the ship. Some cruise lines require you to make advance reservations to attend a show and may charge extra for some specific entertainment. On Princess ships, no reservations are required and all entertainment is free and is included in your cruise fare (except for Spellbound). We love the quality of the shows and the flexibility that the Princess entertainment offers.
The Sun Princess offers some additional entertainment offerings to consider; Live performance shows are held in various venues onboard the Sun Princess: The Dome, The Piazza, The Princess Arena, and in Princess Live. Production shows on Princess have always been entertaining, but the new and redesigned venues allow Princess to feature new styles of entertainment not previously seen before. The Dome and The Piazza, with their high ceilings, can be used for Cirque-style acrobat and aerialist shows. The Princess Arena – where the headline production shows are held - is a departure from the standard Princess Theater that are found on the other Princess ships. The Princess Live stage is also a popular spot for a variety of entertainment options.
In addition, some bars such as Crooners, O'Malley's Pub, and the Wheelhouse bar at times offer live music to tap your toes to. The Wheelhouse Bar also hosts some trivia games or karaoke during sea days, and has board games to borrow during the cruise.
Upcoming entertainment shows for the following day are listed in the Princess Patter which is delivered to your stateroom each evening by your room steward. In addition, upcoming shows are listed on the Journey View tab on your Princess Cruises App. If you see a particular show you don't want to miss you can bookmark the event on your App. You can also view upcoming shows on the Digital Portals located throughout the ship. The Wake Show is broadcasted from the Princess Live venue each morning and features the ship's Cruise Director and guests outlining the day's entertainment and activities. This show can be viewed live on your stateroom TV or on the big screen on the Lido Deck (17). A recording of the show can also be viewed each day on your stateroom TV.
Visually contemporary and versatile, the Princess Arena is an evolution and the most technologically advanced Princess Theater design. Located at the front of the ship, guests enter the arena from either Decks 7 or 8. Immediately guests will be drawn to a stunning visual above the central stage which can become part of the show. The radical ceiling accentuates the Arena’s in-the-round configuration with soft curved walls that allude to the movement of the tide. The main stage features a circular component that can be raised and lowered, and moveable seating is almost in the round with three configurations which maximize sight lines, as technological capabilities help deliver a truly captivating experience. The Princess Arena has a capacity of 900 - 1,000 people (depending upon its configuration) however it does require you to arrive early to be assured of a seat. Don't plan on showing up 15 minutes before showtime and expect to find a seat. We have witnessed people going to claim their seats an hour before the 7 pm or 9 pm showings! If you want to see a particular production we advise to go to the Arena about 45-60 minutes before showtime and browse social media or read the news to pass the time before the start of the show. Just relax, you're on vacation!
Currently there are four shows scheduled in the Princess Arena:
NEW! Vallora, A Pirate Quest – Created, directed and choreographed by Danny Teeson of "American Idol" fame, the show features an upbeat and nostalgic 80’s soundtrack, including Eurythmics’ "Sweet Dreams," Survivor’s "Eye of the Tiger," Chicago’s "You’re the Inspiration" and Starship’s "Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now." The show follows the intrepid heroine ‘Vallora’ through a pirate adventure, telling a thrilling story of searching for what’s lost and above all else, family and love.
NEW! Stage Struck – Celebrating musical theater, Stage Struck features "On Broadway" from Smokey Joe’s Café, "Danced All Night" from My Fair Lady, "Take Me or Leave Me" from Rent and "One Night Only" from Dreamgirls. Directed and choreographed by Karen Bruce, of "So You Think You Can Dance" for BBC and numerous shows on the West End.
NEW! Viva La Música – This scintillating musical experience from famed Latin American choreographer Liz Imperio, the well-known choreographer of concert tours for Jennifer Lopez, Madonna and Gloria Estefan, features Latin soundtrack favorites like Miami Sound Machine’s "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You," Camila Cabello’s "Havana," Santana’s "Maria Maria," and Shakira’s "Hips Don’t Lie." The Latin Grammy inspired concert is highlighted by a dance couple who invite guests to join them on the dance floor for a unique immersive experience.
PRINCESS FAVORITE REIMAGINED! Fiera! – Love blossoms at a turn-of-the-last-century colorful European fairground in a story revealed through an artfully selected medley of popular songs such as Ceelo Green’s "Bright Lights, Bigger City," Bruno Mars’ "Just the Way You Are" and Michael Jackson's "Man in the Mirror."Directed by famed choreographer Danny Teeson, a large, brilliantly costumed cast of performers brings the story to life, dancing on a vibrant set with a spectacular digital backdrop.
Inspired by the enchanting terraces of Santorini, The Dome is a pioneering glass paneled geodesic structure, the first of its kind ever constructed on a cruise ship. By day, it transforms into an indoor/outdoor oasis with a sparkling indoor pool (which connects to the outdoor pool in the Sea View Terrace area), while at night, it evolves into an electrifying entertainment venue with a South Beach vibe.
The tiered design allows circulation space around the stage and ensures that every guest have the best view possible. The Dome is a popular relaxing area during the day, and many guest lounge here to read as it is a quiet area. This area is also air conditioned so if it is very hot outdoors but you still want to feel like you're sitting outside you can go here, although it still will not be as cool as other parts of the ship that are air conditioned because the expansive glass dome lets in a lot of hot sun and is not effective in keeping it cool.
Daytime sun lounger seating converts into two standard seats for evening performances, doubling its capacity. Even then, this venue 250 evening seating capacity is rather small for the size of this ship which means you have to arrive very early to find seat for an evening performance.
There have been reports that the acoustics in the dome are less than ideal and some performances may require audience members to wear supplied headphones to better hear the entertainment clearly.
For evening entertainment, the mesmerizing artistry of one of the entertainment industry's biggest names, the renowned Cirque Éloize, will be on full display in The Dome, a remarkable multi-level entertainment venue perched atop the ship.
Three specially created and captivating shows - "Blue," "Come Fly Away," and "Artbeat" - will transport guests into a world of emotion, color, and music, featuring awe-inspiring acts such as aerial hoops, aerial poles, bungees, Cyr wheel, silks, mind-bending contortions, and more.
Catch Movies Under the Stars®, (at times referred to as MUTS) with the giant poolside LED movie screen and powerful sound system. Take in some of the finest cruise ship entertainment as the screen lights up the top decks day or night with feature films, thrilling concerts and exciting sporting events. During the days, popular movies, concerts, and documentaries are shown and can be viewed as you lounge around the main pool area. During the evenings, recline on a deck lounger, bundle up beneath a provided cozy fleece blanket, feast on popcorn or cookies and milk, and enjoy first run feature films that are currently being shown in theaters. (It appears that in an effort to reduce cruising costs Princess may not be showing as many first run feature films as in the past)
During the second leg of this cruise we will also be able to watch the Super Bowl (February 8) on this big screen. You just have to arrive early to claim a good lounger!
The Piazza on the Sun Princess is HUGE compared to any other Princess ship and allows seating for up to 300 people from viewing areas located on multiple decks. The three level atrium features large suspended spherical glass domed side windows to view the passing sea and to allow natural light to filter into the expansive entertainment area. The Piazza features a large movable LED screen to display backgrounds for various entertainment shows and the ability for a small area of the floor to be raised and used as a small stage. You may see live bands, game shows, acrobatic acts, or exercise classes being held in the Piazza area. This is a central hub of activity for the ship.
Unfortunately, the sound from some of these activities affects some nearby venues.
Live acts and spirited gatherings. Join friends at an intimate table at Princess Live and enjoy an ever-changing variety of live performances taking the stage. This lounge is similar to the Princess Live lounge found on the Princess ships. We do wish they would have made this venue larger though as we have heard that it fills up quickly. The "Wake Show" is also broadcast from here each morning giving cruisers an insight on the upcoming events throughout the day.
Located forward of the Piazza on Deck 7
The food and drinks are a la carte. The fun and laughs are free.
Spellbound is a spectacular one-of-a-kind experience created in partnership with The Magic Castle™. This Victorian-themed bar features magicians performing mind-bending entertainment, themed rooms and theatrical cocktails served with sleight of hand. Dinner used to be included with this experience ($149 per person charge) and was limited to 30 people and only one production per evening. The experience now has changed to 5 shows per evening with no dinner and a magic show which includes some cocktails. Reservations are suggested.
Here is a video of what you would expect to do there.

So how do you keep track of all the entertainment options that will be offered to you? The Princess Patter, the ship's newsletter, will be left in your stateroom each evening by your room steward and it will show you the entertainment options for the following day. We often highlight things we want to see and do. Remember to bring along a highlighter pen when you pack for this cruise!
The more modern way to keep track of entertainment options, is to use your Princess Cruises App which will allow you to browse and bookmark the upcoming events onboard the ship throughout your cruise to help you plan your days and evenings. It can often be a struggle to decide what you want to do with so many options available to you. You can also use the MedallionClass Digital Portals which are located throughout the ship (usually near elevators) to search for upcoming events.
