Based on the NRCS Conservation Planning process, Carbon Farm Planning is a holistic, systems approach to conservation planning with the carbon cycle and carbon capture as the organizing principle in which the farm or ranch plan is constructed. When implemented, creating a plan designed through a carbon lens will be a living document that will:
Enhance soil health
Increase carbon sequestration
Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Improve the agricultural productivity and resilience
A full outline of a carbon farm plan is included in the following section, but some key components of a carbon farm plan include:
Inventory and analysis of current resources conditions
On farm assessment for carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emission potential
Client choice regarding implementation of conservation system to address resource concerns and carbon capture opportunities
Living document. A carbon farm plan is expected to evolve to meet the needs of the producers, and update materials as new information and practices become available.
