Showcase one includes the self reflection I completed as a part of my entrance into the Honors College and self reflection I am doing now as a prepare to graduate. As a part of that self-reflection I am sharing my Personal Journey Map and "I am" /"I want to become" personal statements created as a part of H200 in Fall of 2022. They shows the path that got me to to IUI, and into the Honor College, who I was during that time and my goals during my first semester as an honors student. I am also sharing some events and personal reflection since taking H200.
These Statement were written as a part of H200 in Fall of 2022. They show who I was during that time and my goals during my first semester as an honors student. The statements are part 1 of my Showcase Artifact 1.
In the three years since I wrote these statements my goals have shifted but not changed completely. The biggest change is that they are no longer just vague, fuzzy ideas. I have a better idea of what I want following graduation and at least a start in getting there. It is comforting to realize that even though I haven't fully accomplished most of these goals I have take real steps towards reaching them. Unlike when I wrote these statements I am no longer just waiting, and hoping the path to reach them would present itself. These days those goals are coming together and a path is developing! I knew that I wanted to figure out my style in art and now I'm working on a thesis project that is unique to me. I knew that I wanted to become more confident and better at talking to people and even though I still have a ways to go, I have improved.
Today most of those goals are no longer just ideas. I am still a little ways off from accomplished them but I have a plan and I'm in a place to get started. It's overwhelming to consider everything that the future could hold, but not as overwhelming or as unknown as it was when I wrote these statements three years ago.
"Even if I am still a little ways off from accomplished them, I have a plan and I'm in a place to get started."
Personal Statement: I am a creative and goal-oriented college student but in the years to come, I hope to build on the skills I have now to become a confident and organized artist with lots of pets.
"I am trying to develop good judgment and become a person who can be realistic about her goals and the people around her without settling for too little. "
"I want to go outside every day and someday have a home filled with rescue cats and dogs, all with their own personalities. "
I am...
I am someone who is hopeful and creative when faced with a challenge. I love a good puzzle and know how to find them in the roadblocks of everyday life. Spending time outside and around art brings me the joy and inspiration I need to create work I am proud of. I value being organized and focused. Achieving a list of goals helps me find time to spend with the important people in my life, especially my pets and they motivate me to always move forward.
I want to become...
Currently, I am a Drawing & Illustration, and Printmaking student at Herron School of Art and Design, IUPUI but I want to become a professional artist and create successful work that speaks to people other than just myself. In the years ahead I want to nail down my personal art style and weave together the two disciplines within my major into something that is uniquely me. I am always trying to become a better communicator and I want to become someone skilled enough in visual communication to have a real impact on issues that are important to me.
I want to learn to be more confident and become someone who can explain her beliefs clearly and confidently at a moment's notice, along with becoming someone who can still pull off pigtails as an adult. I want to keep my silly quirks and playfulness, and I want to make sure the world never steals my optimism. I am trying to develop good judgment and become a person who can be realistic about her goals and the people around her without settling for too little.
I want to learn to balance my school and work life with hobbies and become someone who remembers to run regularly even when life is most chaotic and busy. I am already independent, but I want to learn to stop second-guessing myself and have the guts to walk into the world and do intimidating things even when there is nobody to go with me. I hope to find my place in a strong community while always remembering that I can be happy alone. I want to go outside every day and someday have a home filled with rescue cats and dogs, all with their own personalities.
The map below shows me, and the important steps that got me to where I was in fall of 2022. The events I choose to mark out on the map where the ones that felt significant at the time. They were events that impacted my choice of college, major, post-college goals, ect. It is organized in chronological order and each stop includes a section of reflection identifying what made that moment important.
Each step was small but built on each other to make me who I was at that time. Being able to identify the significance of these moments gave me more direction as I made decisions going forward. There have been many events since then but these are still important ones in getting me to where I am today.
"Each step was small but built on each other to make me who I was at that time."
"The hours I spent in this yard with my pets were fundamental to my love of nature, the environment and animals."
"This experience made me reconsider my own abilities and options as a future artist."
Since this map was completed life has continued to happen and impacted my goals. Here are a few of the most significant events as I make progress towards my long term goals and find a path to accomplish them.
I have been an employee at the Indianapolis Zoo for two and a half years. I spend my weekends working at the zoo where I get to see the animals, talk to guests and pick up more interesting facts than I know what to do with.
I have continued my taking classes for my major and improved my skills as an artist and illustrator. My best work to this point has been completed in the past three years and I have made progress in identifying my own style.
I have started a minor in Sustainability Management. This has allowed me to get a more through understanding of our environmental laws and what we can actually do to make progress in this space.
I am now near graduation and completing my final work as a college student. I am completing my minor, completing my thesis project and make concrete plans for what my first post-college steps will be.
"I never could have imagined how all of those small, random experiences would be coming together today."
My experiences in the past three years haven't dramatically changed my goals from when I originally made this map but they have adjusted those goals and I never could have imagined how all of those small, random experiences would be coming together today. When I was designing this map I had just started my job at the Zoo and had just begun taking classes for my major. I though that working at the zoo would be cool and printmaking would be something fun to try. Now my time at the Zoo has become a major influence on my artwork and printmaking is an important part of my skill set. At the time, I had so plans but no real idea of what those plans would look like when they were accomplished. Now those plans are more than just vague ideas. The details are a little unclear but I know what I want to end results to look like. Seeing all the the little things I was interested in three years ago come together in a way that will shape my immediate future has been a really interesting and exciting experience over the last year.
