Information: Scaphinotus angusticollis reside in coastal forests, and slightly further inland temperate rainforests of the Pacific American Coast. These specialised hunters have a rather slender, elongated prothorax and head, making for an easier job when consuming the flesh of snails, slugs, worms or insect larvae.
Description: body; ovate-robust, pronotum semi-cordate. Dorsal colouration varies from matte black, pronotum matte grey or black, elytra matte or glossy black, matte grey, matte red, or dark glossy red. Pronotum elongate-cordate, slender. Head elongate, slender. The dorsal surface of the head should be weakly wrinkled, matte grey or black; clypeus semi-glossy grey or black, smooth; labrum resembles an inverted 'U' shape, inner dorsal margins rough, with a setigerous pit near the front of either lateral dorsal margin. Mandibles dark, elongate-slender; inner margins toothed; outer basal margins flattish. Palpi long, glossy black; each with a broad, semi-triangular final segment, front margin yellow. Eyes reduced in size, weakly bulging laterally. Pronotum small, semi-cordate, slender. Front angles obtuse, slightly bent forward; lateral margins sinuous; hind angles squared; basal margin weakly rounded outward. Lateral and front margins beaded. Median line strong, pronotal disk on either side of the median weakly elevated; the dorsal basal margin should be slightly depressed, rough. Scutellum very small, not visible without magnification. 20-26 shallow striae per elytron, in some individuals, the striae are nearly vanished fully; intervals, if striae are present, should be weakly elevated. Humeral shoulder obtuse, sloped apically, apices pointed. Ventral colouration glossy black, legs black.
