Zopheridae
Zopheridae
This diverse family is currently split into two subfamilies, as seen below. Members of this family are rarely encountered and there are few experts on them, compared to other groups. To me, this family represents the "misfits." While all genera in the family share similar characteristics, they can appear significantly different. See Hyporhagus vs. Phellopsis. The subfamily Colydiinae was only recently moved to Zopherinae and was previously "Colydiidae." Monommatini were also recently moved to Zopheridae.
Zopherids are most often found through berlese funnels, beating dead tree branches, peeling bark and flipping logs, depending on the target species. This site includes notes about how to find each individual species.
Some zopherids such as the Colydiines are thought to feed on bark beetle larvae or their fungal gardens, while most others feed on various fungi. The larger larva are specialized for feeding on wood.
