Distribution; North America North of Mexico, Europe, Northwest Asia. U.S. States where nemoralis are not recognised; AZ, NM, KS, OK, IA, MO, AR, all Southeastern states South of Virginia.
Information: Often inhabit woodlands, residential areas, ie. parks, gardens. Tend to prefer cooler, wet temperatures. Carnivorous, prey upon caterpillars, insect larvae and pupae, worms, gastropods, and other carabids.
Description: ovate-robust. Elytra dark bronzish-brown, elytra absent, dorsal faces of elytra lined with long wrinkles, margins pink, upturned. Hind pronotal angles acute, curved towards the obtuse humeral angles of the elytra. Pronotum quadrate, front edges curved inwards; dorsal faces of hind disk angles violet, blue or bronze, punctate dorsally. Head extremely wrinkled, with uneven ridges seen within; glossy black; wide, large mandibles. Occiput smooth; constricted into "neck." Antennal pubescence begins on the third antennomere after the pedicel. Ventral faces and legs glossy black. Palps black.
Adult male specimens have very wide protarsi, with pads on the undersides. females have rather narrow protarsi; ventral pads absent.
