Distribution; Throughout the Palearctic, Western USA, Northeastern USA, widespread throughout Canada, Europe and Asia.
Information: May be found along bodies of water, fields, prairies, tend to prefer slightly cooler, damp environments. Carnivorous, prey upon small insects, gastropods, and worms. Also may be found in groups in or under logs or tree stumps during cold winter months.
Description: body: elongate-ovate, slender. Dorsal colouration: metallic silver, dark grey, or bronze. Ventral faces glossy black, legs glossy black. Antennae glossy black, pubescence begins on the third antennomere after the pedicel. Mandibles glossy black, sometimes with dark reddish tips. Palps black. Head black, with numerous small, shallow pits, otherwise flat. Pronotal disk nearly quadrate, front angles slightly curved inwards, hind angles right or rounded-acute. Disk rough. Lateral margins of pronotum and elytra upturned slightly; thin. Elytral intervals separated by elevated costa, typically into three sections, each interval contains a row of somewhat unevenly occurring, elongate granules. The granules nearest to the elytral apex generally are smaller, while those nearer to the base of the elytra tend to be more elongated.
