Calosoma scrutator
Size: 26-37mm
Seasonality: Most active March-October
Distribution; across North America; absent North of Washington and Montana
Information: predatory, prey primarily upon insect larvae; ie. caterpillars, grubs, rel. May also prey on adult insects when the chance is provided, such as leps, grasshoppers, crickets, katydids, or other beetles. No similar carabids found on the West Coast, Caloroma aurocinctum may be found near the Mexican-US border and in Texas, east of New Mexico are the significantly smaller Calosoma wilcoxi.
Description: elongate-ovate, robust, convex. Pronotum short lengthwise, but strongly transversely-ovate. Colouration variable per location, elytra tend to be duller as one travels further to the east. Elytra: dull to bright metallic green, elytral margins wide, bright red, blue, or orange. Head triangular; surface of the head strongly wrinkles over and in front of the eyes, centre of the head mostly smooth, weakly convex; the two dimples on the frons should connect with the wrinkles over the eyes, and strongly continue onto the clypeus. Labrum broad, but very short, anterior margin wavy. Mandibles very long, wide; mandibles curved; dorsally microrugate (many very small winkles). Palpi black, with pale front margins. Antennae black; antennal pubescence begins on the third antennomere following the pedicel (segment 5). Eyes small, very strongly bulging laterally. Pronotal margins thick, generally black or dark blue; centre of pronotal disk dark matte blue or black, margined by rings of shiny blue, gold, green, and/or red. Anterior margin weakly rounded inward; anterior angles obtuse, margins dip down at them; lateral margins beaded, round; hind angles obtuse; basal margins sinuous. Median line thin, with small wrinkles spanning out from it. Either side of the lower median bulge should have a slight depression. 16-17 deep, well-defined, thinly-pitted striae per elytron, intervals weakly elevated. Humeral shoulders broad, obtuse; lateral margins straight, angles outward apically (elytral region pentagonal); apices pointed. Ventral: legs are metallic, dark blue. Sternites bright, iridescent green, wrinkled patches near margins, inner margin of each sternite lined with blotchy gold areas. Rest of ventral faces of similar iridescent green colouration.
