Distribution; Western California
Information: this species is only known as far north as Mt. Shasta in California; often found in pairs under logs and ground debris around Quercus agrifolia (Live Oak) and Pinus radiata (Monterey Pine) woodlands.
Description: body: elongate-oblong, slender. Dorsal and ventral colouration very similar to one another: dark red in mature adults, pale yellow to orange in semi-teneral adults. Head triangular, eyes slightly reduced, bulging weakly. Dorsal surface of the head smooth, glossy dark red. A small ridge should be found over the eyes, which begins just above the back of the eye, spanning over and ending abruptly just past the base of the scapus. Face short; mandibles longish, strongly curved at mandibular apices; lower mouth parts pale. Pale antennal pubescence begins on the second antennomere following the pedicel, antennal segments all should be dark red. Pronotum elongate semi-rectangular; lateral margins curve weakly inwards from the basal angles, then out and back in; front angles obtuse; hind angles squared, lateral bead entire. Median line strong, lower median bulge weak, rest of the disk smooth. 6-7 well-defined striae per elytron, intervals flat or weakly elevated. Scutellum fully exposed, humeral shoulders bent forwards slightly, sharply, or rounded-obtuse. Laterobasal ridge not elevated higher than the elytral intervals, entire. No additional elytral pubescence should be present. Apices round.
