Pterostichus amethystinus
Pterostichus amethystinus
Size: 9.8-12mm
Seasonality: April-January
Distribution; coastal Alaska-coastal California
Information: may be found among leaf litter in forested locations, normally within 60 kilometres of the Pacific Ocean.
Description: body: elongate-oblong, slender. The head and pronotal disk are typically semi-glossy black, elytra may be black or may have a violet lustre. Head triangular, face short; mandibles long, slender, weakly curved near apices. Palpi dark or pale brown, tips pale. Surface of the head smooth, with two setae above each eye; eyes reduced, weakly bulging laterally; small ridge begins over the eye, ending abruptly in front of the scapus' base. Scapus, pedicel, and first following antennomere lack pubescence, which begins on the second antennomere following the pedicel. Antennal segments reddish-brown in colour, in some specimens, nearly black. Pronotum elongate-rectangular; front angles acute, front margin curved inwards of the disk; lateral margins rounded, hind angles squarish. Lateral bead of the pronotal disk begins at each of the front angles, then travels along the lateral and basal margins, ending abruptly at the base of the median bulge. Basal median bulge appears rough, with a single misshapen depression on either side of it, at the dorsal hind angles. Median line prominent, rest of the disk should be smooth. 8 well-defined striae with weakly convex intervals should be found on each elytron. No additional setae/pubescence, nor fovea should be present on the elytra of this species, only the marginal setae found on most carabids. {[Two parascutellar pores should be found, one on each of the elytra; laterobasal ridges entire. The section of the lateral beads of both hind angles should not be smooth, and should have a few minor indentations. (All of these may be seen in the second photo included on this page.)]} Humeral shoulders rounded-obtuse, lateral pronotal margins rounded, apices weakly sinuous, nearly squared. Ventral faces glossy black, including legs.
