Seasonality: March-November
Distribution; North America

Description: body: elongate-ovate, moderately robust. (Females generally longer and broader than males, otherwise, physical descriptions are just about the same. The dorsal photo shown on this page is of a female specimen.) Head narow, triangular, often dark shiny blue or black with green-blue sheen; most of the head is dorsally smooth, though has two rough indents between the antennae and on the clypeus. Mandibles curved into points, close the the face; mandibles dark orange with black inner margins. Palpi pale or dark orange with very pale tips. Eyes large, bulging laterally somewhat; two setae over each eye. Scapus uniformly pale orange, rest of antennae dark; antennal pubescence begins just before the second half of the second antennomere following the pedicel. Pronotum round; lateral beading nearly entire, ending abruptly before the base of the lower median bulge. Median line shallow, with many small wrinkles spanning outward from it briefly; lateral margins slightly depressed, the depression should connect to the larger, rough depressions found on either side of the median bulge. The pronotal disk should be glossy, or semi-glossy nearly matte blue, blue-green, or black with blue/green reflection. Front pronotal margin rounded inward; front angles obtuse; lateral margins round; hind angles obtuse; basal margins sinuous. Scutellum and laterobasal ridges (entire) exposed. 8 thin, shallow striae per elytron, intervals flat; generally semi-matte green-blue, blue, or glossy black. The males should have 4-5 fovea on the 3rd interval, touching the 3rd stria, which occur between the elytral base and about halfway along the elytra; on the 2nd stria, two additional fovea should be found touching the 2nd stria, which are located between the midpoint of the elytra and the apices. Humeral shoulders obtuse; lateral elytral margins round, elongated; apices weakly sinuous. Ventral colouration glossy black, sometimes with blue patches. Tibiae dark reddish, femora dark reddish to black.
The left elytron pictured below is that of a male Agonum placidum, while the left elytron shown above is that of a female Agonum placidum. Each are from the exact same collection event, in Fruitland, Idaho.
