Information: May be found under logs, debris, and/or stones along rivers and lakes during the day, generally nocturnal. Adults become most active after sundown, at which point they often congregate on silt or mud river and stream banks to mate and hunt for small invertebrates. Adults may be found overwintering under stones and plant debris near waterways. Generally capable of flight.
Description: body: elongate-oblong, moderately robust. Head triangular, glossy dark piceous to black, sometimes with a green reflection. Eyes do not bulge laterally strongly, two setae over each eye. The surface of the head should be smooth, with two indents at the front of the head and on the clypeus; two small fovea on either side of the clypeus; mandibles red, inner margin black; mandibles weakly curved at tips; palpi orange with pale tips. Antennae orange to brown, antennal pubescence begins on the second half of the second antennomere following the pedicel. Pronotum semi-quadrate, weakly elongated in some individuals. Front angles obtuse; lateral margins sinuous; hind angles obtuse, slightly bent upwards; basal margin weakly sinuous; no lateral beading. Median line shallow, but strong; pronotum glossy piceous; disk smooth aside from minor wrinkles around the median line, and the large, rough indentation found on either side of the median bulge; the pronotum should not be as wide as, nor wider than, the elytral shoulder width. 8-9 well-defined striae per elytron, intervals flat; dark to pale piceous, glossy. Humeral shoulders broadly rounded; apices somewhat truncate-sinuate, flattened. Ventral colouration dark glossy piceous, nearly black; legs pale orange to yellow.
