Agonum melanarium
Agonum melanarium
Size: 8.7-11mm
Seasonality: on the West Coast: February-October (Varies from one region to the next based on the weather and temperature)
Distribution; WA, OR, n. CA, ID-ME, BC, AB, SK, MB, s. ON, s. QC
Information: based on data collected from only the West Coast: generally found in damp areas, under roadside leaf litter, under stones along running water, ditches running through or parallel to fields, amongst leaf litter in temperate rainforests throughout the Pacific Northwest. Often found near other carabids, in scattered groups, which tend to huddle together under stones around tree trunks, under logs, during heavy rains. On warm, sunny days, one may see the species darting around atop mud in wetlands, in riverside flood planes, or along creeks.
Description: body: elongate-oblong, moderately robust. Head slender, triangular. Eyes large, but only slightly bulging laterally; two long, dark setae over each eye; surface of the head smooth; minor impressions at the front of the head between the antennae; mandibles relatively broad, curved into points at the tips, inner margin straight, without any additional prongs. Body colouration fully glossy black; mandibles may have a slight reddish margin, tibiae dark red. Antennal pubescence begins on the second antennomere following the pedicel. Pronotum ovate; front margin curved inward weakly; front angles obtuse; lateral margins round; hind angles obtuse, basal margin very weakly sinuous; lateral beading complete, bardering the entire pronotum. Median line faint, with very shallow wrinkles spreading away from it. The centre of the pronotal disk almost without any microsculpture, with faint microsculpturing around the margins. One large depression may be found on either side of the median bulge. 7-8 deep, well-defined, pitted striae per elytron, intervals mostly flat; microsculpture transversely-stretched, thin. Interval 3 should have 3 fovea containing individual seta, two between the elytral base and halfway down the disk, both of which touch the 3rd stria, followed by the 3rd, which is preapical, and touches the 2nd stria. Humeral shoulders rounded, apices pointed. Ventral colouration glossy black.
All Agonum adults are sexually dimorphic, and may be sexed based on the width of the protarsi.
