Notiophilus sylvaticus
Notiophilus sylvaticus
Size: 5-6mm
Seasonality: adults may be found year round, but tend to be slightly less active around the middle of the year
Distribution; nw. CA, OR, WA, w. BC, s. AK
Information: may be found in very, or relatively damp forested areas, during heat waves, tend to stay near mud. Often among leaf litter in spread out groups, burrows small and made in mud: opening parallel with ground, semi-circular opening.
Description: body: elongate-oblong, slender. Head broad, triangular, eyes considerably large, bulging forwards; face short, slender. Mandibles small, sharp, weakly curved at tips, mostly obscured when closed by squarish, dull golden labrum. Clypeus short, metallic bronze-gold colouration, strongly wrinkled. Surface of head deeply furrowed, grooves spanning down the head towards the clypeus; generally of silver to dull purple-bronze colouration. One large pit may be found above each eye, each holding one short seta. Antennae relatively short, scapus, pedicel, and two following antennomeres yellow, rest are brown. Sparse pubescence begins on the second half of the second antennomere following the pedicel. Pronotum somewhat hexagonal; hind angles obtuse, nearly squared, lateral margins proceed to move steadily outwards from the base, then abruptly turn towards the base of the head, this angle occurs very near to the head, and has one long seta protruding from it on each occurrence. From there the margins curve inwards briefly, then towards the head again to form the pronotal apex. Lateral margins weakly upturned near the head. Dorsal surfaces of the pronotum heavily pitted and wrinkled, metallic black. Pits and wrinkles are deep, median line nearly absent. No smooth surfaces should be present atop the pronotal disk of this species. Pronotal basal margin does not overlap with the elytral base, scutellum exposed. Four wide pits, two on each elytron, should be hidden among the pitted striae touching the laterobasal ridge. Pronotal base width typically slightly narrower than elytral shoulders. >> Humeral shoulders rounded. Elytral apices pointed, with rounded tips. 7-9 striae per elytron, all formed by lines of shallow, minute pits, the 2 or 3 pitted striae nearest the lateral margins should have carinated intervals, weakly raised. The first striation should be beside the elytral suture, followed by a smooth, black gap about the width of four or five intervals (which ends just before the elytral apices), after which the remaining striae are regularly occurring. The first or second interval after the large gap should contain an 'O' shaped pit, often creating an X-like connection of the 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th striae; occurring almost halfway down the elytra from the humeral shoulder. Dorsal colouration of the apices yellowish, rest of elytra metallic black.
