Notiophilus directus
Notiophilus directus
Size: 4.8-5.7mm
Seasonality: April-October
Distribution; sw. AB-s. BC south to ne. CA, n. NM and n. AZ
Information: tend to be found amongst leaf litter, relatively close to bodies of water and/or tributaries in montane regions.
Description: body: elongate-oblong, slender. Head broad, triangular, eyes considerably large, bulging forwards; face short. Mandibles small, sharp; weakly curved at tips; mostly obscured when closed by square, metallic silver or bronzish labrum. Clypeus semi-quadrate, with the margin between the eyes rounded somewhat towards the front of the head; metallic bronze-gold colouration, often with silvery margins; not strongly wrinkled; wrinkles shallow, no more than four or six present. Surface of head deeply furrowed, grooves spanning down the head towards the clypeus; head metallic gold, violet, silver, and/or copper in colour. One pit may be found above each eye, each holding one long seta. Antennae relatively short, scapus, pedicel, and two following antennomeres orange, rest are brown. Sparse pubescence may begin on the scapus or the second antennomere following the pedicel; such patterns are often inconsistent within a population, as well as within the same specimen. The antennal pubescence become much more dense by the third or fourth antennomere after the pedicel. Pronotum somewhat hexagonal; hind angles sharply acute, weakly bent outwards; lateral margins proceed to move steadily outwards from the base, then abruptly turn towards the base of the head, this angle occurs very near to the head, and has one long seta protruding from it on each occurrence. From there the margins travel weakly towards the base of the head until they meet, forming the pronotal apex. Lateral margins weakly upturned only along the lateral and hind pronotal margins. Dorsal surfaces of the pronotum heavily pitted; pits may be relatively shallow, or deep. Median line faint. No large smooth surfaces should be present atop the pronotal disk of this species. Pronotal basal margin does not overlap with the elytral base, scutellum exposed. Two preapical pores. Elytra glossy silver or bronzish. 7-8 pitted striae per elytron; pits shallow; stria interval between stria 1 and 2 about the width of four striae (incl. intervals), which is smooth, glossy black. Ventral faces glossy black with dark greenish hues. Legs reddish, tibiae pale, femora dark.
