Nebria brevicollis
Nebria brevicollis
Size: 10.5-13.4mm
Seasonality: September-May
Distribution; Europe, west Asia. Invasive in North America; s. BC, WA, OR, CA, PA, VA, NY.
Information: the species is generally very social within it's species, and may be found alongside, or nearby, multiple other brevicollis, ranging from one or two others, up to multiple hundreds. Active both during the day and night, but primarily nocturnal, at which point the species becomes quite active as they run around hunting and mating. May be found eating a wide array of relatively small soft-bodied invertebrates, but is also known to scavenge upon dead vertebrates and some fungi.
Description: body: elongate-ovate, slender. Dorsal and ventral colouration glossy black; tibiae and tarsi red, femora black. Head triangular, the surface of the head is sparsely punctate, with two rough dimples on the head. Eyes bulg laterally, two supraorbital setae over each eye. Dimples on the frons briefly continue onto the clypeus; labrum rectangular, about the same size as the clypeus, front margin curved inward. Mandibles strongly curved, tips sharp; mandibles dark red. Palpi orange-brown, tips pale. Antennae dark reddish; short, dense antennal pubescence begins on the third antennomere following the pedicel. Pronotum cordate, often the broadst point of the pronotum is nearly as wide as the elytral shoulders. Lateral margins strongly beaded. Front margin straight; front angles acute, angles forward; lateral margins sinuous; hind angles squared; basal margin weakly sinuous. Median line strong, the centre of the disk on either side of it should be elevated: rounded, smooth; the dorsal lateral, basal, and front margins of the pronotum are depressed, and heavily punctate. Elytra elongate-ovate; 8 well-defined, pitted striae per elytron, intervals weakly raised. The 3rd elytral interval should have 7-8 small setigerous pits touching the 3rd stria, which are unevenly scattered along the third interval. Humeral shoulders round, sloping apically; lateral margins strongly beaded; epipleura often dark red or black; apices weakly sinuate.
