Harpalus affinis
Harpalus affinis
Size: 8.4-12mm
Seasonality: most active from March-November
Distribution; New Zealand, Europe and parts of north and east Asia, parts of the Middle East, western USA and Canada, eastern USA and Canada.
Information: may be found along ocean side beaches and dunes, most types of forests, meadows, fields, gardens, along waterways, roadsides, under stones and other debris. Primarily nocturnal, generally capable of flight. <<Because this species has numerous colour variations, the provided description will only be using colouration if it if a portion of the carabid which is uniformly said colour; i.e. palps, pronotal lateral margins, antennae, legs.>>
Description: body: elongate-oblong, moderately robust, flattish. Dorsal colouration varies within populations. Head triangular; head mostly smooth, with two slender dimples on the frons, which continue onto the clypeus: clypeus otherwise smooth. Labrum rectangular; lateral margins slightly wider at the base than the anterior margin width; lateral and anterior margins weakly opaque yellow. Mandibles strongly curved, close to the head, dark. Palpi orange. Scapus and/or the scapus and the pedicel pale orange, the rest of the antennae dark. Antennal pubescence begins on the first or second antennomere following the pedicel. Eyes slightly reduced in size, strongly bulging laterally; a single supraorbital seta may be found over each eye. Pronotum semi-quadrate; anterior margin very slightly rounded inward; anterior angles obtuse; lateral margins rounded, or very faintly sinuate near the hind angle; hind angles obtuse; basal margin weakly sinuous. Lateral and basal margins beaded; median line thin, but typically well-defined; disk mostly smooth, heavily micropunctate along the base and hind angles. Pronotal base slightly narrower than the humeral shoulders, lateral margins broadest near the lateral median. 8 deep, well-defined striae per elytron, intervals weakly elevated on the basal half of the elytra, flattish on the apical half. Humeral shoulders nearly squared, obtuse; lateral margins rounded, elongate; apices rounded, weakly sinuate. Elytral apices pubescent, apical pubescence less evident in males.
