Distribution; The eastern halves of the USA and CAN, and Western Oregon.
Information: may be found along river banks, near/around ponds, streams, and areas which flood seasonally.
Description: body: elongate-ovate, slender. Body fully glossy, see later descriptions for colour details. Head somewhat triangular, face short, mandibles fairly broad, close to face, curved. Mandibles orange with black tips. Head black with a red or orange-yellow marking in the centre of the vertex, eyes bulging from head. Antennae yellow, antennal pubescence begins on the second half of the first antennomere following the pedicel. palps pale orange. Pronotal disk smooth, median line deep, base of disk heavily punctate. Pronotum glossy, a thick, black line divides the disk into three sections, the glossy black centre, and the two thin yellow marginal sections on either side of the black section, margins somewhat wide. Hind angles squared. Lateral margins slightly rounded' front angles weakly curved towards head. Pronotum weakly quadrate-cordate. Elytra long, lateral margins slightly rounded, apex pointed. 8 deep striae per elytron, intervals glossy, elevated slightly. The centre of the elytra has a large dark orange-brown patch which covers mot of the elytra except for the dorsal faces near the shoulders, the first 2 or four elytral intervals, and the dorsal faces above the elytral apex. The dorsal faces of the elytra which are not dark orange-brown are vibrant or pale yellow. Ventral faces glossy dark piceous, yellow, and black, colour patterns ventrally vary hardly from one area to the next.
Description of the colouration of Anisodactylus discoideus found in the Willamette Valley of Oregon:
Head glossy black with dull yellow-orange spot between the eyes at the centre of the vertex. Pronotum glossy, a thick, black line divides the disk into three sections, the glossy black centre, and the two thin orange marginal sections on either side of the black section, margins black or dark orange. Ventral colouration tend to be darker than their eastern kin.
