16. Align to content area standards.
17. Accommodate learner differences.
18. Design a digital learning environment.
I worked with a school to design a handbook that would help educators to create a Drone Program in their schools, specifically for girls.
I use drones in my STEAM class however this was a bit of a learning curve for me because of the amount of research that I needed to complete and also in considering how to best design the handbook to be the most valuable. I also considered the content area of STEAM as well as some specific courses such as art, biology, ecology, and history and how drones could be used in those areas.
As I worked on this handbook, I learned more about the many benefits of drones and the skills that students can build as a result. The creation of the handbook took a great deal of time. However, it was tremendously valuable for the work I do, and my hope is that it will help other educators dive in and bring these opportunities to more students.
Students have many themes to cover in learning a language as well as the development of four skills of speaking, reading, listening, and writing. Being able to intentionally plan to be in alignment with the content area standards as well as the ACTFL World Language standards while also helping students to develop essential digital skills is important.
I decided to create a unit on foods and share with students the targets of their learning and design a visual to help them also evaluate their growth.
In my work, focusing on the Language standards as well as the ISTE standards is essential in order to best prepare students for the future and academic success.
Through the use of HyperDocs, choice boards, project-based learning, and digital tools, I have multiple ways to better understand student progress. Using these, I can differentiate for students through the variety of activities, question types, and content that I can include. Using choice boards gives students an opportunity to take ownership of their learning goals and build confidence as they work through the choices available to them. Also, with HyperDocs, students are able to work at their own pace, choose to do some enrichment activities, and apply their knowledge and learning in more personalized ways.
I offer additional activities or support for them, and it also helps them become more aware of their strengths and areas that they need to work on. Another benefit is they can collaborate with peers and have an opportunity to be creative in what they choose to design to show their learning. With these tools, I can give students the option to choose a tool that might best meet their interests or needs, even using strategies and tools to support project-based learning and genius hour. Students can take more responsibility for their learning, and it gives me an opportunity to work with them and see their growth over time.
Opportunities to build confidence and display creativity, personal interests and engage in meaningful learning is key for student success.
Students in my STEAM course learned about podcasting during the 2022-23 school year. As part of this experience, I wanted students to understand the process of making a podcast and also how to come up with a theme, logo, brand, and all of the components of launching their own podcast. Working with them helped me to also reflect on my own podcast and how I could improve it and also the benefits of podcasting for personal growth and also providing information to others.
I show examples of how I set up the digital learning environments that I have used in my classroom over the last couple of years for blended instruction but with additional tools and resources for remote instruction. Specifically, on slide 2 are two videos that give an overview of some of the different tools that I use to connect students or provide access to materials. I used Padlet to store all of the materials and resources for all of my classes so that students would have one space to access them.
The access to tools such as Padlet or collaborative tools like Google Documents highlights additional ways that we engaged in learning in the digital space and how students could connect on a global scale.
Using different digital tools to create choice boards and share them online has been a great way to provide learning outside of the classroom and also be ready for virtual learning. Genially has been a great tool to learn because of all of the options for students to be creative and for teachers to design interactive learning experiences that are accessible.
Using Padlet has been a great way to set up a digital learning environment. I use Padlet to post class resources, create a scavenger hunt, have students engage in discussions, record short videos or speaking assessments and be able to interact online and build content area and digital citizenship skills.
For some students, posting their projects or writing on a space online helps them to build confidence. It also provides me with opportunities to learn more about students and find new ways to leverage the tools.
