The field of Human Computer Interaction is relatively unknown in Nigeria – both within and outside academia. A recent EduRank ranking of top HCI schools in Africa shows that Nigeria is under-represented in the field of HCI. One major reason for this is the lack of researchers in the field of HCI in Nigeria. In addition, the recent brain drain in Nigeria has also affected the lack of HCI experts. African countries such as Kenya, South Africa, Egypt have successfully organized events such as summer school, conference to bridge the gap with respect to scarcity of HCI researchers in Africa, Nigeria is still lagging due to lack of resources and manpower. Students often interested in HCI in Nigeria face constraints of financial resources to travel to these other African countries to gain the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the field of HCI. Also, human manpower that can successfully serve as mentors in Nigeria is limited.

In summary, we intend to challenge the status quo of HCI in Nigeria, particularly in response to the promising interest of using digital technologies to bring about social and economic intervention. Secondly, to build the human capacity of local academics and practitioners.

Is the workshop only for students?
The workshop is mainly targeted at students at all levels of higher education and early career researchers.
What is the Registration fee for the workshop?
The workshop is ABSOLUTELY FREE. It is an event sponsored by Google Research under Google ExploreCSR Initiative.
Will there be Travel Grant for Participants?
Travel grant would be based on city of departure.
Would Certificate be awarded at the End of the Training?
Yes, a certificate from Google will be issued.
Would this training directly assist in getting a fully funded scholarship?
Not exactly but there are opportunities to continue support top participants to work on their projects and afterwards link them with graduate school opportunities.
Is there provision of Accommodation for participants coming from other cities outside the hosting city?
Yes, adequate provision will be made to cater for accommodation of participants travelling from outside the city.
Will everyone that applied for the workshop be selected?
No, selection will be based on merit as every submission will be peer reviewed by reviewers and only successful applicants will be selected to participate in the workshop
