On Saturday, August 30, the Zero Hero Club, part of the CAPA-MC Growing & Giving Club, participated in the 23rd Washington Chinese Culture Festival in Washington, D.C., from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The weather was beautiful, and the festival was filled with vibrant performances, cultural displays, community organizations, and a wide variety of foods. At the event, the team promoted the “Be a Zero Hero” project and raised awareness about the plastic film recycling problem in Montgomery County. To encourage proper recycling, the team distributed handy pocket-sized cards showing which plastic bags and wraps are accepted and which are not, along with refrigerator magnets. These small but practical handouts could be easily placed at home to help families identify and sort different types of plastics for recycling. What may seem like a small action can, in fact, help make the world greener.
In addition, the volunteer team displayed a large poster introducing the Zero Hero project. The poster featured detailed information about the initiative as well as photos from past events. The team also provided reusable shopping bags for visitors who expressed interest in the project.
The booth attracted a steady stream of visitors throughout the day. Team members actively engaged with attendees, explaining which types of plastic bags are recyclable in Montgomery County and which are not. They also shared information on local drop-off locations, including Giant, Food Lion, Kohl’s, Safeway, Harris Teeter, and Goodwill.
The Zero Hero team reached not only Montgomery County residents but also people from across the country and international visitors, as the festival welcomed participants from many U.S. states and from China. Many attendees took the time to learn more about the plastic film recycling issue. Since the festival celebrated Chinese culture, it provided an excellent opportunity for the Zero Hero team to share this meaningful project with a broad and diverse audience.

Today from 11:30 to 3:45 we went back to our garden in Wootton Mill Park. We had roughly 20 volunteers show up to help us. We were joined by members of Venus school and CAPA-MC Seeds club. The sky was very cloudy and it rained a little bit but stopped when we were still working on the garden. Everyone did a great job in helping the garden. This year we used a metal fence with pvc coating to prevent rusting. We also built a new bin with hinges on the lid so we would have more storage. Like last year, we set up one wooden gate in the front and one in the back. The fence was sturdier than the plastic fence we used last year and it was a lot easier to put up and store.we planted lettuce and pumpkin in the back of our garden. We made raised beds like we did last year and filled the gaps with mulch so people would not trip from the mulch pile. We watered the plants we had just planted into our garden since it barely rained. I thought it was really fun working with my friends in the garden. It is always fun doing things with my friends.

On last Saturday, April 5, the Zero Hero team from the CAPA-MC Growing and Giving Club attended the MCPS Youth Climate Summit at Julius West Middle School. The team was invited by MCPS to provide a workshop for the students attending the summit. First, current club co-president Nathan and program founder Kenneth gave a presentation on the Zero Hero plastic initiative and encouraged the students to start a county-wide plastic bags and film recycling program at their schools.
After the presentation, zero hero team member Alice passed around a questionnaire on how to recycle plastic bags and films in Montgomery County to all the participants. Then, the other two team members Sky and Melody collected the completed questionnaires and gave out prizes, including a family recycling kit. The recycling kit included an educational palm card, a magnet, and a reusable shopping bag to help the students take immediate action to recycle plastic bags at home. Once the students received their prizes, they went to the second station, organized by the National Youth Visionaries Association (NYVA), where they learned to use cardboard, clay, and recycled plastics to create fish artwork in order to raise awareness about protecting local wildlife and watersheds.
The two Recycling Program Specialists from the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection—Jessica and Barbara—also attended our workshop to observe. After the workshop, they praised our efforts in reducing plastic waste in Montgomery County and took a group photo with us. MCPS provided lunch and awarded 7 SSL hours to all attending students. It was a very well-organized and informative event, and we hope more students can attend next year.

On January 1st, 2024, the first day of the New Year, our club went to the Great Falls in Bethesda, Maryland to hike the trail and pick up trash along the way. There were eight families that attended the event, 2024 New Year's Re"hike"ling Day. We brought bags and trash grabbers to collect and store the litter we found while walking along the trail. Our goal was to clean up the environment, educate people about our plastic recycling program, and use this experience as a way to celebrate the new year. Before the hike, student leaders of the club gave a brief talk about the plastic recycling program to new club members and other participants. They used some examples of plastic (bags and films) to teach others how to recycle plastics properly. Our club's new year resolution is to reach as many people as possible in our community and collect 1,000 lbs of plastic bags and films.
如果您有任何问题,请联系 :capa.gardening@gmail.com
