K-5 Winners of the Art Competition

1st Prize, by Leila Yuen, Cedar Grove ES, 4th grade

Description:

Save Our Bay:  My picture illustrates our current environment in comparison. Our bay is slowly being polluted without knowing. We must take actions to save the bay. To start, we must pick up litters when we see it, organize our trash and recycle items. Our main goal is to keep the bay healthy all the time.

2nd Prize, by Samantha Lin, Farmland ES, 3rd Grade

Description:

Small Litter, Big Problems: My artwork shows a scuba diver taking a picture of the Chesapeake Bay. The reflection of the camera shows plastic bags and beverage bottles littering the waterbeds. Litter gets carried by stormwater into sewer systems for waterways to the Bay. Litter destroys aquatic plants, and makes animals sick. I hope my artwork will make people aware that small litter can cause big environmental problems. Please stop littering.

2nd Prize, by Joey Zheng, Clarksburg ES, 4th Grade

Description:

The Chesapeake Bay Cleanup: The earth has very limited safe water for people to drink, for animals to live, and for plants to grow. We are lucky to live in one of the largest watersheds in the world, the Chesapeake Bay. However, we are facing different issues that threaten the Bay, such as the Conowingo Dam, the climate change, the wastewater and etc. In our daily life, our misplaced trash, litter and debris that could enter to the rivers and streams by rain and wind, is affecting the health of our community. We should take actions to protect the watershed and keep the bay healthy and clean. So we have clean water to drink, safe public access point to swim, fish and boat. The wildlife animals also need freshwater to survive.

2nd Prize, by Elaine Shu, Lakewood ES, 5th Grade

Description:

We All Need It, Let's Protect It: My drawing shows a fish that is leaping for a drop of clean water. Humans, animals, and plants all need clean water, so let’s protect our Bay. Under the fish, it is a map showing a portion of the Chesapeake Bay. This represents that both the fish and the water drop come from the Bay. All local creatures rely on the Bay. So, protect the Bay, protect us.

3rd Prize, by Jessica Yu, Fallsmead ES, 1st Grade

Description:

Protecting our water shed: The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is one of the largest coastal water bodies in the world. Protecting the water quality within and ensuring the health of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, given its size and the number of folks living within it, is critical.

3rd Prize, by Karoline Huang, Beverly Farms ES, 3rd Grade

Description:

Save the Bay: In my drawing you can see a giant clam with trash in its mouth. It tells people not to throw trash in the ocean, lake or any natural water, because it will eventually hurt fish, marine animals and their living environment. You will also see trash floating in the bay, like household items and living disposables we use daily. On the top right corner is a broken washing machine with a baby catfish stuck in it. Besides those, you can see more sea animals, like a scared turtle, a depressed snail, a catfish, a blue crab, who is struggling with a piece of string, and an eel. You’ll also find coral and seaweed on the ocean floor as well in my drawing.

3rd Prize, by Emma Hue, Beverly Farms ES, 3rd Grade
