Description -
The pharmaceutical industry is comprised of companies engaged in researching, developing, manufacturing and distributing drugs for human or veterinary use. Pharmaceutical companies may deal in generic or brand medications and medical devices. They are subject to a variety of laws and regulations that govern the patenting, testing, safety, efficacy and marketing of drugs.
The government's latest efforts in import substitution through the establishment of pharmaceutical manufacturing companies, and the final goal of producing 100 percent of pharmaceuticals locally is a longterm one, as a result government initiated the “BUYBACK” agreement with local pharmaceutical manufacturing companies in 2015. This year the agreement completing 5 years adding positive and favorable advantages to the Pharmaceutical industry, and as a result, Government expect 60 percent of the demand for pharmaceutical tablets and pills will be met by locally made drugs by 2020.
According to the Sri Lanka Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Association (SLPMA) until 2004, the Association had eight members. However, the number of members has gone up to 15 at present. This will be a pure evidence to see the Pharmaceutical industry is booming and expanding with the “Buy Back” agreement. Since the expand in the next few years, developing infrastructure to support skills development will become an increasingly important necessity With all above facts and figures, the position of “Pharmaceutical Technologist “who are working in the production facility will have a big demand. Since Pharmaceutical manufacturing is considered as a knowledge driven industry, it is really necessary to create opportunity to have qualified staff to cater to this industry.
