The Campbell Lab

Our Research

The ability of our cells to respond to pathological organisms and other insults is the key to our continued survival. Therefore, we have evolved an amazing repertoire of proteins and pathways that allow our cells to sense danger and trigger cellular responses designed to respond to the threat and mitigate damage to the cell or local tissue environment. However, many pathogens have developed countermeasures to our defense systems which allow them to persist and replicate in our cells, leading to chronic or acute disease. In other cases, our own cellular defense mechanisms go awry and can lead to the development of human disease. Our lab uses imaging based approaches to understand how cellular responses to pathogens or other insults drives the development of disease symptoms.
