There are several ways to utilize the CCBS. Some camps may prefer to administer it to all of their staff at predetermined time points, such as during weekly staff meetings or during transition periods between sessions. Other camps may prefer to only administer the CCBS to camp counselors they suspect might be experiencing burnout. For camps interested in this latter option, you may consider utilizing a screener question.
We created the CCBS using survey data collected from hundreds of overnight camp counselors. While testing the 9 questionnaire items that ended up comprising the final version of the CCBS, we also tested a single item for comparison: "In the past 2 weeks working at camp, I have felt burnt out."
The way that camp counselors responded to this single item predicted their scores on the CCBS. As we hypothesized, higher endorsement of this single item was strongly associated with a higher burnout score on the CCBS. Therefore, this single item can be used as a screener to help determine when and to whom to administer the CCBS.
If your camp already has a system for surveying staff at regular intervals, you may want to include this single item in those materials. Alternatively, supervisors can verbally ask their staff if they are feeling burnt out. For those staff that say they are feeling burnt out, you may choose to administer the CCBS to learn more. Data from the CCBS will help you understand the severity of their burnout (with the overall burnout score) as well as the ways it is manifesting (with the three domain scores). These data can help supervisors choose appropriate interventions.
Below is a flow-chart with one suggested way to utilize the screener question.
