Jazz I is our advanced jazz band for all grades. Tryouts are held in the fall of the new school year and rehearsals will be held twice a week after school. The band will perform at all three school concerts, the Sacramento State Jazz Festival, Woodcreek Jazz Festival, and Gold Country Jazz Festival.

3 Alto Saxophones, 3 Tenor Saxophones, 2 Baritone Saxophones

5 Trumpets

5 Trombones

2 Piano

2 Upright/Electric Bass

2 Drum Sets/Percussion

*Instrumentation is subject to change at the director's discretion

Audition Requirements

Everyone (Yes, even Drummers):

Perform Concert F, Bb, Eb, Ab and  Major Scales (preferably from memory)

Play a prepared excerpt from "Blues with a View" by John Phelps (drive link below)

Sight Read a short Jazz Excerpt

Rhythm Section Only:

Piano- Play the chords to a Concert F 12 Bar Blues

Bass- Play a walking bass line though a Concert F 12 Bar Blues

Drum Set- Play 24 Bars of the following beats Shuffle Beat, Up Tempo Swing, Rock Beat
