High School and Community College Band Directors are invited to nominate up to eight students for participation in the inaugural Festival of Winds Honor Band at Cal Poly Pomona (CPP). This exciting new event is designed for prospective students who are considering CPP for their higher education and are interested in learning more about the university’s music program.

The $120 participation fee includes all festival activities, meals, a campus tour, masterclasses with CPP faculty, and official festival apparel. Adding to the excitement, the inaugural Festival of Winds Honor Band will be conducted by world-renowned composer Frank Ticheli, whose works have inspired musicians and audiences across the globe. This extraordinary opportunity allows students to rehearse and perform under the direction of one of the most celebrated voices in wind band literature.

Participation and seating in the honor band will be determined by director recommendation. Directors will be asked to use a ranking system for their student nominations, with the top two students guaranteed admission to the ensemble. Directors are asked to recommend students who show the artistry, commitment, and maturity needed to shine in a meaningful honor band experience.

Conducting Workshop & Directors Dinner

On Saturday, February 7th (6:00–10:00pm), high school and community college band directors who submit student nominations will be treated to an on-campus dinner from 6:00–7:15pm at the CPP CenterPointe Dining Commons. Following dinner, from 7:30–10:00pm, select directors will be invited to conduct the CPP Wind Ensemble in a workshop setting, receiving clinical feedback from Frank Ticheli and Dr. Rickey Badua (CPP Director of Bands). All directors are welcome to attend and observe the conducting workshop, making this an enriching professional development opportunity in addition to the student-focused festival.
