Admission and placement in the Cal Poly Pomona University band program is determined through a relaxed audition process administered at the beginning of fall semester. The purpose of an audition is to get to know you and your musical ability to ensure you register for the appropriate band. For instance, the Wind Ensemble is our top performing band representing the best musicians on campus and an audition ensures all students admitted are musically prepared to succeed. The Symphonic Winds is open to all musical abilities and the audition is only to ensure we seat and assign parts appropriately to your level .
It is common for new students to be nervous about their first audition. However, Cal Poly Pomona has a long tradition of serving performers from all musical backgrounds. Please do not let the audition process deter your participation. The directors strive to accommodate all students and will work hard to make sure that you feel comfortable and relaxed during your audition.

1) Chromatic Scale (full range of your instrument, performing 8th notes, slurred, bpm = 120)
2) A 2-Octave Major Scale (please choose one that demonstrates your range)
3) Audition Excerpt: perform TWO contrasting sections of music at your level of ability (no more than 1-2 mins of music), one fast section to demonstrate technical ability AND one slow section to demonstrate lyricism/legato style. If you do not have any audition materials, below are two excerpt options if you do not have any repertoire to perform (please choose one option), if you are a music major you must perform the more difficult Option 2 "2A Audition Solo" instead of the Holst. If you are interested in auditioning for the Wind Ensemble, it is strongly recommended you prepare the Option 2 "2A Audition Solo."
