Skills Learned in This Course
Academic Sources
In this course, I have learned how to find, analyze, and correctly source credible academic sources that related to, and proved my statements made in my writing. I have found a new tool in this class called JSTOR, which is a website that contains all of these sources. I have used these academic sources in my essays, specifically my comparative essay and my Othello essay to prove what I was writing about.
This skill will help me next year in my ENG4U course, as well as in university.
Essay Writing
In this course, I have greatly improved my essay writing skills. I have improved writing introductions, body paragraphs, and conclusions. Within body paragraphs, I have improved my understanding of different language and structure analysis features and how to incorporate them.
This skill will help me next year in my ENG4U course.
Reading Analysis
In this course, I have learned to analyze writing further and break down the components of what I am reading. This helped me in my ISP, Unseen Prose Analysis, All Quiet on the Western Front discussions, and Othello work.
This skill will help me next year in my ENG4U course, as well as in university.
My Best Work
One of my best works from this course is my ISP. For my ISP, I read and analyzed The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. The Hate U Give is about a girl named Starr who grew up in a fictional disadvantaged community called Garden Heights, set in the southern United States (no exact location is provided, but Angie Thomas grew up in Jackson, Mississippi which influenced the story which is believed to be the location). The Hate U Give was inspired by Tupac Shakur's idea of THUGLIFE, which stands for: The Hate U Give Little Infants F*cks Everybody. This idea represents an ongoing issue in marginalized communities, which is that the hate that is given to young kids results in them having a disadvantaged future. This is seen in Starr's childhood best friend, Khalil, getting murdered. The perpetual hate that Khalil was given resulted in him viewing police officers different, which resulted in him giving a sense of attitude towards Officer 115, causing a stigma between the two. This caused the officer to become intimidated later in the interaction, which prompted him to shoot Khalil. This murder sparked movement in the local area, with Starr being stuck between her two personalities while trying to navigate Khalil's death. I am proud of this assignment because of the high mark I got.
In this assessment I wrote in the style of Angie Thomas and I rewrote chapter 3 of The Hate U Give. This chapter shows Starr's reaction to Khalil's murder, which occurred right beside her. I wrote this adaptation with very little knowledge about the book, though I quickly learned about the context and writing style from the extract. The use of my improved reading analysis skills from this course helped me with this assignment, resulting in a high grade.
The Unseen Prose Analysis was a creative writing assessment from this course where I was given an extract of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and had to analyze it to answer the question: How does Charles Dickens create a sense of Tension and Suspense in this Extract of A Christmas Carol? I was able to answer this question, with my thesis being: Charles Dickens creates a sense of tension and suspense in this extract by describing the details of Scrooge’s actions following the surprise, with Scrooge finally locating the source of the paranormal surprise. I am proud of this assessment because of the high mark that I got.
