Leadership is group-focused and goal-oriented; a leader inspires a group to work towards a common objective efficiently while considering the needs of each group member. Further, leadership requires initiative with the facilitation of communication and problem solving while receiving feedback and valuing others’ contributions.
Since I began college at UW, my definition of leadership has evolved. Before, I would have identified a leader as someone with a title and with some kind of power dynamic such as age, education, or experience; my idea of leadership was limited to “capital L” leadership roles. Now, I see leaders in the everyday student, intern, or team member who takes action to move a group forward. I can identify classmates, lab partners, and coworkers who do not hold an official leadership title yet play a pivotal role in enabling communication and problem solving within groups.
