The CalcEX competition will run by the following rules. Note that in all instances, the venue coordinator has the final say.
Each team consists of 4 school students, one of whom is the runner. They can be from any year level, but we expect mainly Year 12 and 13 students.
Team members may not have bags, phones, calculators or their own paper with them when competing. Blank paper and an appropriate formula sheet will be provided. Breach of these rules will result in disqualification.
Calculators are not allowed.
Where possible, team members should be in school uniform.
There is a limit of TWO teams per school.
The runner must be the same student for the duration of the quiz. Team runners will be briefed on the venue rules and layout at the beginning of the event.
Runners may not communicate with spectators or other teams.
Failing to follow the instructions given to runners will result in disqualification.
If the venue is a school gym or similar space, runners may be required to wear certain shoes or go barefoot.
Each school should bring one teacher to act as a marker. If this is not possible, check with the venue coordinator before sending teams.
Since “answers only” are submitted by teams, markers do not need to have high level subject knowledge.
Teachers who are not marking should consider themselves as spectators (see Spectator Rules).
Spectators are most welcome.
Spectators must stay in their allocated area, and must not attempt to communicate with the competitors during the quiz. Doing so will result in disqualification.
The runner may only present one solution at a time. If it is incorrect, they must run back to their team before they can submit another answer.
Answers must be written on the question sheet; all previous attempts must be crossed out.
A team can pass on any question (except the first), but may never return to answer that question later.
No points are deducted for incorrect answers or passing.
Markers will only say “Yes” (and give the next question) or “No” to a submitted answer. For consistency between markers, no discussion is possible.
1st, 2nd and 3rd places will be double-checked before final results are announced.
In the event of a dispute, the venue coordinator’s decision is final.
A venue coordinator may decide to pass a decision about rule breaking, disqualification or any other matter on to the overall coordinator, Jamie Sneddon, at their discretion. This is up to the venue coordinator.
Venues are described with locations (e.g. Auckland East) but this does not preclude any school for registering for any venue. A school may take their teams to a venue further than their 'local' venue if they choose.
