The quiz lasts for 30 minutes, and consists of 20 questions.

Each question is worth 5 points, for a maximum of 100 points.

The winning team is the first team to reach 100 points, or the team with the most points after 30 minutes.

In the event of two or more teams having the same score after 30 minutes (or reaching 100 points at the same time), a tie-break question may be asked.

Questions will be written around the content of the Differentiation, Integration and Complex Number NCEA external standards. It is possible that some questions might cross standards (requiring knowledge from two or more standards to answer). Some knowledge of trigonometric identities (as they relate to the external standards) may be required. Some ‘maths puzzle’ questions are also be included.

Formula sheets (Level 3 Calculus) will be provided for team use (link on the right).

Some questions may require an answer in a specific form. Only the answer is required; no evidence of the method(s) used to reach the answer are needed.

The questions will be pitched at the high Merit/Excellence level.

CalcEX will run at the end of each school year (in the last week of Term 3 or beginning of Term 4).

The 2025 competition is for Auckland schools, however there are plans to branch back out to other regions in the future.

Each school is limited to TWO teams.

2025 competition:

5:00 pm teams arrive for registration and welcome

5:30 pm CalcEX begins

6:00 pm CalcEX ends (tie-break if required) then announce winners

6:30 pm end (approx.)
