CALC Quarterly

We here at CALC (Critical Approaches to Libraries Conference) are always looking for new ways to connect people to ideas around critical librarianship. We started with our annual conference, followed by webinars, and in 2024 we are embarking on a new endeavour – CALC Quarterly.

CALC Quarterly is a journal/newsletter which aims to give folks the space to share ideas and experiences around critical librarianship in a formal or informal way.  As with the conference itself, we strive to be inclusive and accessible to all with a commitment to give a platform for a diverse range of voices and experiences.

Our editor is George Cronin (they/them) and they’ve written a short post about what they hope CALC Quarterly will do for our communities, in collaboration with said communities. The key thing here though is that we need you to help us! George is always open to ideas, feedback and offers of support as this thing grows.

But to start with – we need your words, thoughts, and perspectives! So, we are launching our first call for papers. Our suggested prompt is: ‘What does CALC and/or critical librarianship mean to you?’.

To be included in our first issue (or first few issues depending on how many submissions we get!), it would be fantastic if you could submit your contribution to us by Wednesday 31 January 2024. More information on formats and how to submit work can be found on the CALC Quarterly submissions page: https://calcquarterly.org/submissions.

Because we’re committed to accessibility, if you can’t make this deadline then that is totally fine. We will accept submissions on anything related to critical librarianship at any time during the year. Just fling your work at us and we will let you know what happens next.

Finally, if you want to keep up-to-date with CALC Quarterly, you can subscribe to get email alerts when new content comes out. This is a new venture for us so if you do subscribe and something doesn’t work, please do let us know! Our contact info can be found on the CALC Quarterly site and we look seeing what fabulous things you send us!
