- Describe the history of the community.
- I moved to Richmond in 1999 when I got married. Since then Richmond has experienced a ton housing renovations. Housing has simply gotten more expensive. In Richmond there used to be more of a history of violence and gangs. Prior to this, in San Francisco there is a history of ongoing fight towards the implementation of Ethnic Studies in the classroom. These efforts are still present today and have made a huge impact on our community.
- What are the local assets and resources that benefit students and families at our school?
- In the last 6 or so years, I have noticed more community involvement. Learning centers in school, recreational activities at the YMCA, soccer program like Richmond Sol, are just a couple of examples of great moves in the positive direction to make our city a better place. There's also an amazing farmers market on McDonald & 22nd every friday that has the best peaches.
- What are local challenges?
- For kids that are not from Richmond, transportation is a challenge. There is not a BART nearby, and bus routes may be very time consuming. Richmond also has a bad reputation of not being a safe place, so we need to help break out of that belief.
- What should I know as a teacher in this community?
- As a parent, it is my duty to tell you that kids will be kids. They have so much energy, but most of it is because they have hidden passions and crazy ideas that they are eager to express. Teachers, please be patient with them, you can learn from them too.
