The Maritime Aboriginal Peoples Council collaborated with Ocean Wise to create 6 modules that can be used independently from the Climate Action and Oceans Team. Through 6 modules, the Salt to Soil kit explores the interconnectedness of all ecosystems, from the ocean to the forests of both the Pacific and Atlantic coasts of Canada.
See below for descriptions of the modules and to find access to the full document.
Activity time: 30-60 minutes
This module looks at how trees support the ocean's ecosystem and why different species are important to indigenous communities. Students will learn how to identify western redcedar and paper birch, why these species are important for the indigenous communities of either coast and how they help move water and nutrients around the ecosystem and to the ocean.
Activity time: 40-70 minutes
This module moves from trees to animals to explore terrestrial species and their connection to the ocean. The students will learn how animals interact with their ecosystems and food webs, with the specific example of Grizzly bears and Eastern Moose. Students will play a BINGO-like game to find out how each animal affects their ecosystems and has been affected by climate change and Human interaction.
Activity time
Activity Time: ~60 minutes
Activity time ~45 mintues
This module looks at how the oceans, and our effect on it, do not start and stop at the coastline. Students will learn how rain, runoff and rivers carry nutrients from the land to the ocean and/or lakes through a simple watershed model creation. The students will than add human impacts to the watershed to learn how the water also carries pollutants to the ocean in the same manner.
Activity Time: ~40 minutes
This module looks at what each animal does in the ocean and how this can relate to a job. Students will look at how any interest or hobby can relate or become a career in the future.
