We begin our lives as members of a family. What this unit looks like could be anybody's guess. Still, how we do or do not relate with our relatives has a direct bearing on our development throughout our formative years, echoing into adulthood. This is not intended to blame mom or dad. What good is blame, when you feel the way you do now? The family work that we will do together is intended to explore; how you exist in the family now or what from your past is still alive, inside of you, today.
From my position, I see how the role men have traditionally held, has changed over the years, decades, and so on. What once served humans well in terms of survival, seems to rub against the values of modern society. The stereo types of "manliness" (aggression, leadership, dominance, masked emotions, provider etc.) and what it means to be a man, traditionally, can create tremendous stress and pressure; when in this world we rely on diplomacy, democracy, compassion, civility, and cooperation. Furthermore, even the struggle to connect with a valued significant other can take it's toll on the individual.
If there is anything we know about our society it is the importance we place on occupation. One of the first questions we ask a new acquaintance is; "So, what do you do?" Theodore Roosevelt once said; "Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing." It is not difficult to see that we tend to wrap our identities up inside of the work that we do and the positions we hold. If we find ourselves in an unfulfilling position, well, we find ourselves less than filled.
There are numerous services out there for those who feel stuck, or need some focused reflection. Often times we may question the precise locus of the issue. Is it biological? Is it cognitive? What about what it is that you are doing? Perhaps you just do not feel up to the task in a variety of ways. Coaching is often a great way to sort these things out. Coaching is a great tool if you find yourself stuck in the moment. A well trained coach can assist in vetting these issues; to assist you in your quest towards moving in a direction that you feel confident in.
