BURBANK HOME VANISHES FOLLOWING STORM
Burbank Tales Times — October 31, 1949
Seven more years disappear from the surviving record.
We wish we knew what happened during them.
Because by 1949, the situation has escalated dramatically.
An entire Burbank home has vanished.
Not burned.
Not collapsed.
Vanished.
And according to the newspaper, it is the third home to disappear in less than two years.
Before vanishing, the property was plagued by phenomena we've encountered repeatedly:
Furniture moving.
Children speaking to unseen figures.
Knocking beneath the floors.
Voices coming from a television.
Then came another violent and unnatural storm.
By morning, only a vacant lot and deep cracks in the earth remained.
More troubling are the descriptions of the previous vanished homes.
One reportedly had coffins beneath its foundation.
Another experienced violent possessions, levitating furniture, swarms of flies and children speaking in unfamiliar voices.
These no longer feel like separate stories.
The asylum land was developed.
The cemetery was supposedly moved.
Homes were built.
Then the disturbances moved inside them.
And now some of the houses themselves are disappearing.
The smaller story reports anonymous telephone calls immediately preceding brutal attacks in newly developed neighborhoods.
Again, the date matters:
October 31.
Hallow's Eve.
The same night on which, thirty years earlier, residents were told to disguise themselves, illuminate carved pumpkins and offer treats so that wandering dead would pass them by.
There are seven years of newspapers missing before this page.
Perhaps other reports once filled that gap.
Whatever happened during those missing years, someone apparently believed this page was worth saving.
