NEW ANNOUNCEMENT AND RELEVANT ISSUES

11 APRIL 2022

Early this year amid the sign of improvement of the Covid-19 situation, we made an announcement that BUMA X could have been organised as an in-person conference where we could greet and welcome you this coming July in Bangkok, Thailand.

Of course, despite more Covid-19 restrictions are relaxed in Thailand, this does not guarantee a hassle-free travel to Thailand (and back to your home country). To be able to bring us together, we are pleased to announce that the conference will now take place online on the same dates announced (6-8 July 2022). We are also happy to make this conference free, hoping to promote wider participation in BUMA, for this meeting and into the future.

The conference will be delivered over a professional platform, Zoom and other social media platforms, and will be managed by professional technical team.

We would like to encourage you to register for this BUMA X conference via this link (https://forms.office.com/r/B7DkaBEFBX), and you will be sent the link for attending.

We are grateful for your support and understanding.

nEW dATE aNNOUNCEMENT AND rELEVANT ISSUES

26 NOVEMBER 2021

DEAR POTENTIAL PRESENTERS, PARTICIPANTS, COLLEAGUES, AND FRIENDS

The BUMA conference is founded on the bringing together of scholars with similar interests in Asian archaeometallurgy and its connection to wider historical contexts. Attending a conference does not only mean listening to new and intriguing research but also interacting with people, exchanging ideas, and learning about the people behind the papers.

Of course, we had originally hoped to meet you in September 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in postponement since large gatherings were forbidden. For the past year, we have observed the situation very closely in order to set a new date that will be possible for all of us to meet in person, whilst enjoying the safe and pleasant atmosphere in Bangkok. The recent COVID-19 situation in Thailand, i.e. the devastating third waves, however, made it very difficult for us to select and announce the new date.

After much deliberation between the Local Organising Committee and the International Standing Committee, the Bangkok BUMA X will now be held approximately two years later from its original date, from 6-8 July 2022 (with a welcoming party on 5th and an excursion on 9th), at the same venues. The Thai Government plans to reopen the country (or at least Thailand's famous destinations, including Bangkok) in late 2021, and this allows us to resume our preparation for the conference in July 2022. We will keep you informed of the progression of this reopening campaign.

We would like to express our gratitude to our originally accepted participants for your interest in sharing your research with the community. A two-year hiatus, however, is certainly long enough for progress in research and discovery, and substantial changes to our participants’ contributions, i.e. abstract, may be required. We kindly ask you to reconfirm your participation in this conference via this Google Form (https://forms.gle/o4uNAVLzg7HZcDG56) and resubmit your revised abstract (bumaxbkk@gmail.com) before 15 November 2021. Please note that, if necessary, some submitted abstracts may be reviewed by BUMA committee. In addition, the call for papers and posters shall later re-open to fill any empty slots.

The programme timetable will remain similar to that originally announced, and our official website, registration, and payment system will be updated accordingly.

We sincerely hope for your understanding that all decisions we have made are faithful to the best interests of the BUMA community and we thank you in advance for your kind cooperation.

Any further enquiries can be made to the Local Organising Committee via the conference staff, Pi Venunan, using bumaxbkk@gmail.com.

On behalf of the Standing committee and the organising committee of BUMA X, we very much look forward to welcoming you to Bangkok in July 2022.

BUMA X 2020 Postponed
15 May 2020

DEAR POTENTIAL PRESENTERS, PARTICIPANTS, COLLEAGUES, AND FRIENDS

It is with deep regret that the organising committee have to announce the postponement of BUMA X due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

We fully recognise and appreciate your interest in participating, any efforts made preparing to present research, and willingness to exchange your ideas with the Asian archaeometallurgy community. However, given the global situation, the high-risk nature of a large public meeting, the international travel restrictions, and no vaccines and limited rapid tests to ensure our safety, the postponement of the event appears to be the most responsible resolution for all concerned parties. This is not the decision we made lightly and university and government policy left us no choice.

New dates will be announced soon. Upon this decision, we deeply apologise for any actions you may have made in order to participate in this event.

For those whose presentations have been officially accepted (oral and poster presentation), the decision remains in effect, and you will be prioritised for presentation. You will be contacted once the new date is decided. Any registration and payment made will still be eligible.

On behalf of the Standing committee and the organising committee of BUMA X, we wish you safe and healthy and hope that this will be over soon so that we can indeed meet and enjoy BUMA X together in Bangkok, all in good health.

As always, should you have any enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best wishes from Thailand to the rest of the world.

Welcome to BUMA X 2022

The international conference on “the Beginnings of the Use of Metals and Alloys” (BUMA) is the interdisciplinary gathering of archaeologists, engineers, historians and scientists with a focus on the production and use of metals, and an emphasis on cultural interactions and evolutions over time and space, especially between the West and the Asian region.

BUMA was founded in 1981 by two late eminent archaeometallurgists Prof Robert Maddin (USA) and Prof Tsun Ko (China) with the strong support of late Professors Cyril Stanley Smith (MIT) and Yunoshin Imai (Tohoku University). Since its inauguration in Beijing in 1981, the gathering has gone from strength to strength, travelling from Zhengzhou, China (1986), Sanmenxia, China (1992), Matsue, Japan (1998), Gyeongju, South Korea (2002), Beijing, China (2006), Bangalore, India (2009). Nara, Japan (2013), and Busan, South Korea (2017).

The 10th edition of the BUMA series sees the first ever Southeast Asian conference, held in Bangkok, Thailand, organised by the Faculty of Archaeology, Silpakorn University, Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Anthropology Centre (SAC), and Fine Arts Department (FAD).

The 10th BUMA conference (BUMA X) will be held as a virtual conference.
