At the top of Buller's representative pathway sits our Heartland team, a side that proudly carries the hopes, passion, and traditions of our rugby community every time they pull on the red and blue jersey.
Buller competes in New Zealand Rugby's Heartland Championship, a competition made up of twelve proud provincial unions from towns and rural communities throughout New Zealand. Each season teams battle through a round-robin competition before progressing to either the prestigious Meads Cup (1st–4th) or Lochore Cup (5th–8th) playoffs.
Heartland rugby is about more than just results. It celebrates the heart and soul of provincial rugby, communities backing their local players, generations of supporters lining the sidelines, and players representing the places they call home.
Alongside the Meads Cup and Lochore Cup, teams also compete for the Bill Osborne Taonga, Heartland rugby's own challenge trophy. Heartland unions also have the opportunity to challenge for New Zealand rugby's most famous prize, the Ranfurly Shield, creating moments that become part of provincial rugby folklore.
For Buller players, representing the Heartland side is the pinnacle of the local rugby pathway. It is the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of those who have worn the jersey before them, represent the region with pride, and write their own chapter in Buller's rich rugby history.
