Pathways to Quantum Summer Immersion Program 2025
Quantum is the study of matter at the smallest scales - the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. The first quantum revolution gave us the transistor that is at the heart of classical computers and other devices like charge coupled devices that allow us to take digital photographs. Studies of the quantum realm have progressed and we are starting to be able to harness other quantum properties like entanglement for use in technologies that promise to usher in a second quantum revolution. This second quantum revolution is already allowing for the creation of quantum sensors that can be used in applications from precision timing, mapping, and medicine. Quantum cryptography is being developed as a way to safely transmit data. Quantum computers are growing in size and stability and hold promise for exponentially increasing the speed at which certain kinds of computational problems can be addressed. Companies are hiring expertise in these areas and need more people with an understanding of the weird and exciting world of quantum. Come join us to get your first taste of how the quantum world works and how it is being harnessed for these new technologies.

Review application questions before submitting your application:
1. Statement of Interest – Please tell us more about yourself and your interest in the Pathways to Quantum Summer Immersion Program. Please write a paragraph or two on your interest that answers the following questions (150-200 words):
1. Why do you want to participate in the program?
2. Why do you want to learn more about quantum?
3. What are your future educational and/or career aspirations?
4. What are you excited about learning in the program?
2. The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?
3. In the question below use the slider to rate your own understanding, knowledge, and interest in quantum. Note: Prior knowledge of quantum is neither expected nor required for participants in this project, this information is requested to help with course design.
Understanding of quantum
Knowledge of career paths available in quantum
Interest in quantum
4. If you have learned about quantum previously, how have you done so?
Industry quantum courses such as IBM, Microsoft, Google, etc. (Please specify)
Specialized quantum content such as QubitxQubit, NQLN, etc. (Please specify)
YouTube videos on quantum (Please specify)
Other online videos on quantum (Please specify)
Other (Please specify)
5. List the three most significant activities/programs you have participated in during the past three years preferably those that relate to your area of interest. Under “Year,” indicate the calendar year of the training or activity. Highlight leadership roles (extracurricular/community groups, national organizations) and intellectual pursuits (research, presentations, competitions).
Include: 1) Activity and Organization, 2) Position Held, 3) Time involved, and 4) Years Involved.
6. List the three most significant research/study experiences you have participated in during the past three years that relate to your area of interest. Include the name of any group, organization, or individual with whom you studied.
7. List the three most significant honors or recognition you’ve received in the past three years related to your area of interest.
8. Include a teacher’s name and email address of a teacher who is willing to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf. You DO NOT need to include a letter of recommendation when you submit an application, just a name and email address. Only students who proceed to the second round will require a letter, which we will solicit.
Applicants who make it to the final round will be invited to a virtual interview with GMU faculty. Interviews will be held the weeks of March 31 - April 11. Questions and interview structure will be shared in advance.
