GIRLS IN ENGINEERING MATH AND SCIENCE
The Girls in Engineering Math and Science club was started in 2017 in order to inspire girls to engage in the areas of STEM. With a noticeable gap in the enrollment and participation of female students in advanced math and science courses as well as STEM clubs and competitions, GEMS is meant to encourage girls to pursue opportunities to investigate and explore areas of math, science, and particularly engineering by offering a supportive group where girls are challenged and given the chance to take risks. It is an organization that reaches beyond just an after school program and strives to make an impact within the community. GEMS has partnered with various groups including NASA, TSYS, and Columbus Water Works to expose girls to career opportunities in the various STEM fields. The ultimate goal of the GEMS club is to help girls see their potential as an agent of change throughout the world; to show them that they are the doers, makers, and problem-solvers of the future.
The GEMS Podcast
Beginning in 2020, GEMS has created its very own podcast to highlight amazing, successful women in STEM. Each episode features a remarkable women in STEM and their work. These women come from a variety of women, each with their own inspiration story.
Podcast Impact
In April 2021, GEMS has been recognized by the local Ledger - Enquire. This paper, which reaches out to the entire Columbus, GA region, discussed the GEMS club and its podcast. Girls in AP STEM
Build Brave Girls and GEMS teamed up to create a program that encourages girls to take AP STEM classes. Specifically, this program focuses on increasing the number of girls in AP Physics. Founded in 2019, this program uses posters and face to face conversations to encourage girls to take AP STEM classes. The program has seen a 35% increase in the number of girls enrolled in AP STEM.
