What if it rains/snows/storms/floods/[insert odd weather phenomenon here]? What if it’s really cold!?!
We know weather can be unpredictable, inconvenient, and downright uncomfortable, but don't let that discourage you from joining us! We're an all weather group so rain, snow, wind, cold - you name it, we're ready for it! We only cancel if the weather is really severe, but honestly, that's a rare occurrence. We like to work with Mother Nature and adjust our classes to fit those conditions.
So, then what gear do we need? This is going to cost a fortune, isn’t it?
Well, let's talk about gear! With cold, muddy, and rainy weather a given, you’re going to want to think about winter gear for your family. Remember you need to also dress YOURSELF for the weather. So, make sure you’re on the shopping list! Don't worry about purchasing brand new gear - it's bound to get dirty, muddy, or torn anyway. Check out secondhand stores or outlet sales for great deals. Winter gear can be pricey, and kids grow so quickly, it's not worth breaking the bank for. Besides, the weather's usually pretty mild for most of our meets!
What gear do you absolutely need?
Well, this depends on your situation. In my opinion, a backpack(or bag, at least for caregivers), a good water bottle, mud boots, a rain jacket and pants or rain suit, and a winter coat are must-haves.
Extras that you may also want to consider: a light or fleece jacket, water-resistant gloves, a merino wool base layer, and a warm hat with ear flaps (or a balaclava).
What do adults wear?
For myself, in the colder months, I wear Duluth Flex Fire Hose pants (and they come in a fleece-lined version too!) and I have a Columbia 3n1 coat system – but usually only need the lining jacket! I have waterproof hiking boots that I wear, and wool socks. I don’t have to buy rain pants for myself because the Duluth pants shed water. I have a generic REI rain jacket that is remarkably comfortable. And lastly, a pair of Barton ski gloves that I found at an outlet store for 75% off. Anything else I wear is usually just "normal" clothes.
Quick tip on colors here:
When you're looking for gear for your kiddo(s), consider bright colors! While camo might look “cool,” it’s typically going to do the job it’s intended for. So, bright colors (even just some fun stripes) will make it easier to spot your wild child from afar.
Also, feel free to ask any gear questions you have. Personal opinion again, but I feel a lot of parents are reluctant to ask questions, and they end up spending far more money than necessary.
