Hoedown - Hoe-Down - Hoe down
A "hoedown" refers to a lively, communal dance gathering, typically featuring folk or square dances, and the music associated with it, often characterized by upbeat, hillbilly or old time fiddle tunes. It can also refer to the musical style itself, particularly in square dance contexts. The term likely originated from the resemblance of dance moves to digging the ground with a hoe.
William H. Stepp played his version of Bonaparte's Retreat for the Alan Lomax Library of Congress recording in 1937. The tune formed the basis for the "Hoe-Down" section of "Rodeo" by Aaron Copland.
Buffalo Dave and the Square Dance Heroes have arranged and recorded many versions and variations of the popular hoedown theme based off of the William H. Stepp version:

I use cross tuning or fiddle tuning for most of my version of hoedown.
