Abstract

In this talk, we navigate the journey of professional growth and success, specifically designed for engineers in Canada coming from Bangladesh. Drawing upon personal experiences, this presentation delves into how setting clear goals, strategic investment of time, and unwavering pursuit could lead to your goals. Although hard work and determination are crucial in realizing one's dreams, this talk also emphasizes the importance of creating opportunities through initiative and innovation. A key aspect of this talk is understanding the value of criticism. Far from being a negative force, constructive criticism can be portrayed as a vital tool for personal and professional development, offering insights that lead to self-improvement and refinement of goals. Moreover, the presentation underscores the significance of volunteering and networking, showcasing how these endeavors not only augment professional capabilities but also contribute to forging a strong, supportive community. This talk serves as a guide for aspiring engineers, encouraging them to navigate the complexities of their careers with resilience, adaptability, and a positive outlook.

Speaker's Bio

Dr. Shahria Alam is a Civil Engineering Professor and Tier-1 Principal's Research Chair in Resilient & Green Infrastructure at the University of Brifish Columbia (UBC)'s Okanagan campus. He is the Director of the Green Construction Research & Training Center (GCRTC) at UBC. Dr. Alam is a former faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology (BUET). Currently, he is serving as the Vice-President (Technical Program) of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) and the past Chair of the Engineering Mechanics and Materials Division of CSCE. He chairs/chaired committees of several national and international organizations including ASCE, ACI, NSERC. etc. He received his PhD in Civil/Structural Engineering from Western University in 2008. His research interests include smart and recycled materials and their structural engineering applications. He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed articles in these areas, and is the recipient of numerous national and international awards including several best paper awards. Currently, Dr. Alam is serving on the Editorial Board of ASCE's Journal of Bridge Engineering and Journal of Materials in Civil Engineering and Elsevier's Engineering Structures.
